Pauline Duff is working very hard to organise the 2010/11 workshop syllabus and I can tell you that you will be spoilt for choice.  She has spoken to many of the PAA members about their requirements.  The schedule will be published in the Prospectus, due out late August.   Please register for these workshops as early as possible, as the places available are limited.  We do not like to overcrowd these sessions, as everyone must gain as much as possible from the tutor.

Ian Imrie, Albert Sinclair, Claire Harkess and Claire Dalby’s paintings were selected for the RSW exhibition in Edinburgh. Congratulations and well done.

Claire Harkess had a very successful solo exhibition at the Strathearn Gallery at the beginning of this year.

A painting of mine, showing an Air Ceylon DC3 Dakota flying over a landscape in

Sri-Lanka circa 1956, has been selected by the Guild of Aviation Artists for their Annual Exhibition at the Mall Galleries in London this July.

This year the exhibition was held in the Mission Hall, St. Mathew’s Church, Tay Street, as the Fair Maid’s House was no longer available to us. Although we all enjoyed the Fair Maid’s House and the convenience of an exhibition there, I felt the Mission Hall was ideally placed for all the ‘Arts’ activities happening in that part of Perth during the festival.

Nancy Brooks, Aileen McKenzie and their merry band of artist friends had their display right opposite the Mission Hall. They made absolutely certain that people who were going past their stall made it a point to come across the road to visit us as well. 

It was an exciting couple of days getting the room ready for displaying the artworks, as the Mission Hall was not geared for this type of use. We had to improvise ways of getting round this and had to beg, borrow, but not steal, display boards etc. Some committee and PAA members heeded the call for help and were there, all smiling, and we managed to get the show on the road.

Our special thanks are conveyed to Margaret B as mentioned earlier. Among so many others who helped, l would like to give special thanks to Stewart Gallacher.

He solved the logistical problems we had transporting the heavy display boards from the Perth Theatre and elsewhere and setting them up. His energy (for a man of antique age) was contagious and we all had that wonderful buzz of getting on and achieving results to make it a success. From now on he has nowhere to run or hide. I have his number!

 We had 95 paintings and sculptures on display but only 7 pieces were sold. You may think it a very low percentage considering the number of works on display. As much as I would agree with you, I think also that the exhibition was very successful. The low sales may have been the result of the bad weather on the second day. Perhaps a different layout may encourage sales in future. Most of all it was, and is essentially important that the PAA kept a good profile in the Perth Festival programme, brochures and promotional materials. We didn’t even have a venue come the deadline for publicity!

We would also like to thank Rev. Scott Burton for his assistance in making the hall available to us this year, with a very short lead time.

Last but not least, thank you to the PAA member who brought us a chocolate cake on Saturday, a forfeit paid for bringing paintings late!

The Association’s History

The booklet ‘A Short History of the Perthshire Art Association’ (1912 – 1990) by a past President PAA Walter R. McNiven gives us the stages of growth over the years. He noted that some 150 years ago there was a growing interest in Art generally in Perth and Perthshire which possibly had an influence on the eventual formation of an Art Organisation in 1784. The Literary and Antiquarian Society of Perth was founded with the role of preserving works of Art for the benefit of the community.

Early in the 19th century the Society was to find accommodation to display these works a problem, due to the amassing of works of Art. In 1824 the Marshall Monument was opened in George Street, Perth, providing space for display of a small collection of paintings and other objects. This building now forms part of the present Museum and Art Gallery. Many paintings were gifted to the City of Perth and in 1878 were exhibited in the City Hall to the general public. Other exhibitions followed which created an enormous problem to the Town Council with regard to storage and display. This was alleviated by the opening of the Sandeman Library in 1898. On 21 November 1899, the Sandeman Art Committee was appointed to administer the activities of the Sandeman Gallery. The Art Association for the City and County of Perth was formed on 9 November 1912 with R. Hay Robertson as Chairman of the Management Committee. The first Exhibition of Works of Art was held in the Sandeman Library Gallery in 1913 and continued until 1931.

The Perth Art Gallery and Museum opened in George Street in 1935 with bequest from R. Hay Robertson and another member of the first Committee of Management of the Association, Mr. Robert Brough, who was also Hon. Vice President of PAA in 1926 – 1927. The Association struggled to survive in the 1930s and eventually went into abeyance in 1935. In January 1952, at the instigation of the then Curator of the Museum, William Davidson, assisted by Elspeth Galloway, DA, an Exhibition of works by Perthshire Artists was held in the Museum and Art Gallery and a meeting was held thereafter which led to the reconstitution of the Perthshire Art Association and it has been active ever since.

The quest for suitable accommodation for Association activities has been ongoing.

Since 1953, the Local Authority, initially Perth Town Council and through various Local Government Re-organisations to the present Perth and Kinross Council, has leased rooms to the Association at such venues as Fechney Buildings, The Old Academy, Rose Terrace, Pitheavlis Castle, The Fair Maid’s House and latterly Oakbank Community Centre.

The acquirement of the Fair Maid’s House by the Royal Scottish Geographical Society has meant that the Association is once again looking to the Council for satisfactory permanent accommodation arrangements.
